nous disposons aujourd'hui de tant de connaissances et de ressources, pourquoi tant d'enfants et d'adultes vivent dans la pauvret\u00e9, voire dans l'extr\u00eame pauvret\u00e9, ou pourquoi nous semblons rester impuissants face aux in\u00e9galit\u00e9s croissantes ou \u00e0 d'autres probl\u00e8mes qui devraient nous faire d\u00e9placer des montagnes, tels que la crise climatique. Je me souviens, au d\u00e9but de ma carri\u00e8re, avoir pos\u00e9 la question \u00e0 un professeur d'universit\u00e9 anglais :<\/p><p>- Vous avez des instituts sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s, des d\u00e9partements d\u00e9di\u00e9s aux enfants, une recherche sociale innovante, des plans d'action avec des budgets d\u00e9di\u00e9s, etc, etc. Comment se fait-il que la situation des enfants au Royaume-Uni soit l'une des pires parmi les pays les plus riches du monde?*<br \/>Il a souri et a r\u00e9pondu de mani\u00e8re quelque peu sarcastique :<br \/>- Nous n'aimons pas beaucoup les enfants.<\/p><p>*En 2008, l'UNICEF a publi\u00e9 le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cultivonslempathie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/rc7_child-well-being-in-rich-countries.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Report Card 7 sur la pauvret\u00e9 des enfants dans les pays riches<\/a>, o\u00f9 le Royaume-Uni \u00e9tait plac\u00e9 au bas du tableau comparatif.<\/p><p>En fait, nous vivons une \u00e9poque privil\u00e9gi\u00e9e. Aujourd'hui, plus que jamais, nous disposons de connaissances sur tous les domaines qui affectent les \u00eatres humains sur le plan physique, psychologique et spirituel, sur le fonctionnement du cerveau ou sur l'impact des exp\u00e9riences n\u00e9gatives v\u00e9cues pendant l'enfance tout au long de la vie (1). Nous disposons d'une m\u00e9decine et d'une technologie de pointe, capables de relever des d\u00e9fis inimaginables, mais aussi des ressources n\u00e9cessaires pour \u00e9radiquer la faim et la maladie, pour adopter des l\u00e9gislations, des politiques et des programmes ayant un impact effectif sur la situation des enfants, pour mettre en place et garantir des services de qualit\u00e9 et pour inverser les effets du climat. Nous disposons de m\u00e9thodologies de formation innovantes. Nous sommes capables de transmettre des connaissances et de transformer des croyances socialement enracin\u00e9es. Bref, nous avons tout ce qu'il faut pour changer la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 et litt\u00e9ralement sauver l'humanit\u00e9. Qu'est-ce qui nous en emp\u00eache ?<\/p><p>En 2008, dans son discours prononc\u00e9 \u00e0 l'occasion de la journ\u00e9e de comm\u00e9moration de Martin Luther King, Obama a parl\u00e9 \u00e0 plusieurs reprises d'un \"d\u00e9ficit d'empathie\" (2).<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\"L'unit\u00e9 est le grand besoin du moment - le grand besoin de ce moment. Non pas parce qu'elle est agr\u00e9able \u00e0 entendre ou qu'elle nous fait nous sentir bien, mais parce que c'est le seul moyen de surmonter le d\u00e9ficit essentiel qui existe dans ce pays.<br \/>Je ne parle pas de d\u00e9ficit budg\u00e9taire. Je ne parle pas d'un d\u00e9ficit commercial. Je ne parle pas d'un d\u00e9ficit de bonnes id\u00e9es ou de nouveaux projets.<br \/>Je parle d'un d\u00e9ficit moral. Je parle d'un d\u00e9ficit d'empathie. Je parle d'une incapacit\u00e9 \u00e0 nous reconna\u00eetre les uns dans les autres, \u00e0 comprendre que nous sommes les gardiens de notre fr\u00e8re, que nous sommes les gardiens de notre s\u0153ur, que, pour reprendre les mots du Dr King, nous sommes tous li\u00e9s par un m\u00eame v\u00eatement de destin.<br \/>Nous souffrons d'un d\u00e9ficit d'empathie lorsque nous continuons \u00e0 envoyer nos enfants dans les couloirs de la honte - des \u00e9coles situ\u00e9es dans les coins oubli\u00e9s de l'Am\u00e9rique o\u00f9 la couleur de la peau influe encore sur le contenu de l'enseignement.<br \/>Nous avons un d\u00e9ficit quand les PDG gagnent plus en dix minutes que certains travailleurs en dix mois ; quand des familles perdent leur maison pour que les cr\u00e9anciers puissent faire des b\u00e9n\u00e9fices ; quand des m\u00e8res ne peuvent pas se payer un m\u00e9decin quand leurs enfants tombent malades...\".<\/p><p>Cette semaine, j'ai eu le privil\u00e8ge de suivre de pr\u00e8s les travaux d'un comit\u00e9 international qui surveille la mise en \u0153uvre de la seule convention au monde pour la protection des enfants contre les abus et l'exploitation sexuels. Un document important \u00e9tait sur la table pour \u00eatre adopt\u00e9. C'est la quatri\u00e8me r\u00e9union pour en discuter et la discussion est une fois de plus anim\u00e9e et le d\u00e9bat semble pencher vers une tendance plus conservatrice. \u00c0 un moment donn\u00e9, l'un des membres de la commission, qui repr\u00e9sente un pays membre, a demand\u00e9 la parole et, de la voix forte et calme qui le caract\u00e9rise, a dit :<br \/>- Chers coll\u00e8gues, n'oublions pas notre r\u00f4le ici. Aujourd'hui, nous ne pouvons pas parler en tant que juristes ou repr\u00e9sentants d'un syst\u00e8me. Conform\u00e9ment au r\u00e8glement de cette commission, nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 choisis au plus haut niveau de nos gouvernements en tant qu'experts des droits de l'enfant, pour d\u00e9fendre leurs int\u00e9r\u00eats. Avant tout, nous sommes ici pour prot\u00e9ger les enfants, pas les syst\u00e8mes juridiques.<\/p><p>J'\u00e9tais d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9mue par la discussion, mais \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0, j'ai eu la chair de poule. Apr\u00e8s son intervention, d'autres membres de la commission ont os\u00e9 oublier qu'ils repr\u00e9sentent des gouvernements et qu'ils doivent avant tout faire de leur mieux pour prot\u00e9ger les int\u00e9r\u00eats des enfants. Mais, peut-\u00eatre plus important encore, ces professionnels ont os\u00e9 montrer leurs \u00e9motions, ont appel\u00e9 leurs coll\u00e8gues \u00e0 essayer de se mettre \u00e0 la place des victimes et \u00e0 imaginer ce que serait une vie enti\u00e8re avec les cons\u00e9quences d'un abus sexuel subi dans l'enfance. Une dame a m\u00eame os\u00e9 dire : \"J'ai une fille, je ne peux m\u00eame pas imaginer ce que je ressentirais si une telle exp\u00e9rience lui arrivait\".<\/p><p>Je voulais remercier personnellement chacun d'entre eux pour leur courage, pour nous avoir rappel\u00e9 que dans notre travail, nous parlons toujours d'enfants, d'\u00eatres humains avec leurs propres sentiments, \u00e9motions, pens\u00e9es, d\u00e9sirs et douleurs. Toute cette session pl\u00e9ni\u00e8re m'a fait r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00e0 l'importance de l'empathie en politique. Tout ce qui est d\u00e9cid\u00e9 en termes politiques a un impact sur les personnes et le monde naturel. Tout ! Tout ce que nous d\u00e9cidons en termes politiques a un impact personnel, c'est pourquoi nous devons introduire l'empathie dans la politique. Nous devons apprendre \u00e0 prendre des d\u00e9cisions bas\u00e9es sur les sentiments, les \u00e9motions, l'empathie, la compassion et m\u00eame l'amour. Pourquoi serions-nous de moins bons professionnels si nous pensions d'abord \u00e0 la personne et ensuite au syst\u00e8me ? Dans quel monde sommes-nous cens\u00e9s nous d\u00e9connecter de nos \u00e9motions et adopter des politiques qui ont un impact sur la sant\u00e9, l'\u00e9conomie familiale, l'\u00e9ducation, l'environnement et d'autres domaines, sans penser aux personnes qui seront affect\u00e9es ?<\/p><p>Je n'ai jamais pu s\u00e9parer l'\u00e9motion de mon travail. Dans les discussions techniques, je ne vois pas les difficult\u00e9s d'un syst\u00e8me juridique, politique ou op\u00e9rationnel ; je ne vois que l'imp\u00e9ratif de prot\u00e9ger les enfants et d'am\u00e9liorer leur vie. Je ne vois que la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de comprendre comment nous pouvons renforcer la l\u00e9gislation, am\u00e9liorer la qualit\u00e9 des services, soutenir les professionnels qui travaillent avec les enfants et garantir au mieux leurs droits, comme le pr\u00e9conise la Convention Internationale sur les Droits de l'Enfant.<\/p><p>Je regarde autour de moi et je vois la peur dans les yeux de l'adulte, la peur de montrer ses \u00e9motions par peur de para\u00eetre fragile, d'\u00eatre jug\u00e9, d'\u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme inf\u00e9rieur. La peur de dire tout haut : les enfants ont besoin d'amour et je refuse de signer quoi que ce soit qui garantisse moins que l'amour, la protection et l'attention dont tous les enfants ont besoin, qu'ils m\u00e9ritent et auxquels ils ont droit. <\/p><p>Je pleure \u00e0 presque chaque r\u00e9union de cette commission que je suis. Je pleure parce que je vois des visages d'enfants dans chaque statistique pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e. Je pleure parce que je veux voir des adultes courageux qui tapent du poing sur la table contre l'injustice, mais trop souvent ils s'obstinent \u00e0 ne pas le faire. Je pleure pour une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 qui a peur d'aimer, de ressentir, d'\u00eatre \u00e9mue et de dire haut et fort \"nous sommes l'amour et seul l'amour peut nous sauver\".<\/p><p>L'amour fait de moi un meilleur professionnel. Je le sais.<\/p><p>Cette semaine, j'ai beaucoup appris sur la valeur de l'empathie au travail. Il ne s'agit pas seulement d'oser dire \"Je veux prot\u00e9ger les enfants avant tout\", il faut aussi \u00e9couter la version de l'autre. Pourquoi d\u00e9fendez-vous le syst\u00e8me avant les enfants ? Qu'est-ce qui vous motive ? Expliquez-moi, je veux comprendre votre opinion. C'est finalement dans cette confrontation que nous pourrons nous rencontrer et \u00eatre en empathie les uns avec les autres.
